ENGLISH CULTURAL ORIENTATION (ECO)

Do you want to develop cross-cultural skills and improve your English? The English and Cultural Orientation (ECO) School exists to do just that. The ECO school offers total immersion in the English language, while also exploring God’s heart for the many rich and diverse cultures around the world. Whether your calling is into missions or into the spheres of society, this school will help prepare you to work cross-culturally and communicate in English.

This school is upon to those of every nation and language and offers intermediate and advanced English language tracks depending on your level of experience. The ECO School gives you genuine cross-cultural experience on our international campus including in worship, prayer, small groups and work duties – all in the English language.

Osana Silva

My name is Osana, and I am originally from Brazil. I’ve been living at YWAM Harpenden for four years now. I did ECO (English Cultural Orientation)) in 2017 and when my time here was finishing God led me to a new direction and in 2018, I did the Crossroads DTS.

Now I am serving as a full-time staff in different ministries around the campus and had co-led two DTS outreach to Albania. I am passionate about people and for Discipleship.

Rachel Souza

My Name is Rachel Souza I am a Brazilian/American missionary in England. I am married and have two beautiful children. I worked as an English teacher in Brazil for many years and am currently full time staff in YWAM Harpenden. I am passionate about discipleship and equipping people for missions! I have served in two ECO and am very excited to be co-leading one now.

COURSE CONTENT

In addition to developing your English skills (listening, speaking and writing) the ECO school includes teaching on the following topics:

  • What is culture?
  • Know your own culture: hot vs. cold
  • The gospel and culture
  • Entering another culture
  • Acceptance and trust
  • Social skills
  • Understanding other faiths
  • Cross-cultural communication: listening and being heard
  • Tensions and difficulties: overcoming barriers
  • Culture shock

Outreach/Field Placement

Following this course, trainees may have the opportunity to do a field-based internship with one of our partner locations in the UK.
