HOSPITALITY SEMINAR

Entertaining seeks to impress people, hospitality seeks to bless people.

The hospitality seminar is for people who would like to grow in their understanding of spiritual and practical hospitality; whether that be in a ministry context or in their own personal lives. This is not a seminar about napkin-folding, and it’s not just for women! Hospitality is one of YWAM’s key foundational values, and is about learning how to leave people better than we found them.

Starting with a biblical understanding of God’s heart for hospitality, this seminar is a balance between teaching, practical skills, spiritual and character development – such as overcoming fear of inadequacy and holding back. This seminar is an opportunity to learn, grow and have fun!

This seminar will include guest speaker Caleb Camp, author of “The Hospitality of God”.

Hospitality is the love language of our heavenly Father. His Word is permeated with a demand for hospitality. In Deuteronomy 10:19, He tells the Israelites to, “Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.” This truth was not solely for the Jewish nation, but also for us; for we see in Mark 10:45 God showing us all that his standard for hospitality is personal when He said, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Every time I walk into the Hospitality house of YWAM Harpenden I am met with the reality of this passage. As I arrived at the base in the fall of 2017 to attend the Hospitality Seminar lead by Rita Pretorius, her adherence to this maxim was abundantly evident. I was there to learn to be hospitable, and Rita and her amazing ladies in the Hospitality House began to teach me by example from the moment I stepped into the building.

The Hospitality Seminar started at the Cross. After welcoming us and introducing herself, Rita asked us to write down any issues we were struggling with and pin them to the cross. Then we prayed for God to restore the brokenness we had written about. What a dynamic message for us to remember that Hospitality begins with God and his love for us, and that he desires us to share that love to others.

Throughout the week, Rita educated us on the many, many areas of Hospitality, and how our actions could be as a calming and restorative balm to the weary traveler, or a beacon of clarity for the lost, or a comfort for the bereaved. In every facet of life, God has a demand for us to be hospitable and welcoming to his children.

We heard from tremendous speakers who spoke life into Rita’s teaching by relating their personal experiences in needing hospitality, and how they were affected by the their welcome, or lack thereof. It was a real eye opener to realize that how we receive and care for those in our path could affect their lives.

Rita gave us some practical skill applications as well, such as learning to create gift boxes, fold napkins and decorate a table, make cinnamon ornaments and host a dinner party. She made the classes fun and interactive, and really cared to hear from our experiences in providing hospitality as well. It was a wonderful and informative time, as well a lift for my spirit. I would recommend this Seminar for anyone, not just those who feel God’s call to serve in Hospitality. We cannot forget that God’s greatest commandment was to Love; this seminar reminded me of that command in a very pleasant and caring way. The perfect show of Hospitality.
